چکیده

Seismic mapping of subsurface faults is hampered by factors such as seismic resolution, velocity control for depth conversion and human bias. Here, we explore the challenges pitfalls related to interpreting normal comparing objective subjective uncertainties. A panel 20 interpreters, with different geoscientific backgrounds, interpreted in modern conventional (dominant frequency 40 Hz) high-resolution P-Cable 150 3D data from Hoop area, SW Barents Sea. The interpretations created test-panel were sorted into 10 scenarios characterized fault geometries. These explored 2(3)D point-spread function based convolution modelling investigate potential image detailed architectures. results reveal that: (1) Statistical analysis shows considerable variations between manually picked faults. (2) Identifying location tips challenging smaller antithetic are rarely recognizable. (3) Uncertainties arise masking closely spaced segments even where displacement values large, showing distorted reflection signatures apparent extensional tip monoclines. distortion larger versus data. (4) In vertical resolution reflections small offset m 5 m, respectively. (5) utilisation data, combined modelling, add confidence interpretation same area. We conclude that requires insight uncertainties associated Automatic machine-learning void bias but still limitations. Further, a risking workflow acknowledgement transferred techniques juxtaposition analysis, quantitative seal stability analysis.

Coal seismic diffraction fault imaging: Results from numerical modelling

Modern underground coal mining requires certainty about geological faults and other structural features for safety reasons. Even a fault with a throw of a few metres can create safety issues and lead to costly delays in mine production. To ensure there are no unwelcome surprises concerning seam conditions during mining, seismic reflection surveys have been widely used by Australian coal mines, ...

Examples of seismic modelling

Findings of a few recent asteroseismic studies of the main-sequence pulsating stars, as performed in Wojciech Dziembowski’s group in Warsaw and in Michel Breger’s group in Vienna, are briefly presented and discussed. The selected objects are three hybrid pulsators ν Eridani, 12 Lacertae and γ Pegasi, which show both β Cephei and SPB type modes, and the δ Scuti type star 44Tauri. Session: STARS ...

From Geodetic Imaging of Seismic and Aseismic Fault Slip to Dynamic Modeling of the Seismic Cycle

Understanding the partitioning of seismic and aseismic fault slip is central to seismotectonics as it ultimately determines the seismic potential of faults. Thanks to advances in tectonic geodesy, it is now possible to develop kinematic models of the spatiotemporal evolution of slip over the seismic cycle and to determine the budget of seismic and aseismic slip. Studies of subduction zones and ...

Shallow architecture of the Wadi Araba fault (Dead Sea Transform) from high-resolution seismic investigations

In a high-resolution small-scale seismic experiment we investigated the shallow structure of the Wadi Araba fault (WAF), the principal fault strand of the Dead Sea Transform System between the Gulf of Aqaba/Eilat and the Dead Sea. The experiment consisted of 8 sub-parallel 1 km long seismic lines crossing the WAF. The recording station spacing was 5 m and the source point distance was 20 m. The...
